New Delhi: On Tuesday, March 21, Google Doodle commemorates the Iranian or Persian New Year, often known as Nowruz. The Nowruz-themed doodle depicts spring flowers such as tulips, hyacinths, daffodils, and bee orchids.

It is observed around the time that the days begin to lengthen, a phenomenon called the vernal equinox. Geographically, the celebration heralds the start of spring in the northern hemisphere, and it normally takes place around March 21.

“When winter fades and the northern hemisphere begins to thaw, Nowruz approaches. Today’s Doodle celebrates this ancient occasion that commemorates the start of spring. Every year, more than 300 million people gather around the world to celebrate the season of rebirth,” Google added.

The Google Doodle page also stated that the festival has been proclaimed an international holiday by the United Nations.

“Did you know that the United Nations recognizes Nowruz as an international holiday? This is because families across the Middle East, the South Caucasus, the Black Sea Basin, and Northern, Western, Central, and South Asia celebrate this pleasant event,” according to the page.

In India, it is also regarded as a joyful and holy occasion by the Parsi community. House cleaning, visiting friends and neighbors and making traditional delicacies such as unique desserts, herb rice, and fried fish are all customary rituals for most people.

‘In many cultures, Nowruz also represents the start of a new year – a time to reflect on the past, make plans for the future, and deepen bonds with loved ones. Coloring eggs to commemorate new life, cleaning up your home to prepare for a fresh start, and eating spring veggies and herbs are other traditional rituals.

“Happy Nowruz to everyone who celebrates! May the new year bring you love, peace, and renewed hope “, it went on to say.
