
New Delhi: Google today honoured Indian physicist Anna Mani on her 104th birth anniversary with a whimsical illustration on its home page. It dedicated the creative Google Doodle for all her contributions.
Google Doodle is celebrating the 104th birthday of Anna Mani, one of the first female scientists in India.
Anna Mani, was also known as the ‘Weather Woman of India.’ She laid the groundwork in the country to harness renewable energy, and also conducted several types of research at the predicting agencies in the country.
It was on August 23,1918 that Anni Mani was born in the former state of Travancore (present-day Kerala). During her young years she spent most of the time reading books and at the age of 12 she even read all the books in her public library.
She had also taken formal training under the guidance of Nobel Laureate Sir C. V. Raman. She specialized in the study of rubies and diamonds.
Later, she started specializing in meteorological instrumentation at the Imperial College of London.
After coming back to India, she started working with the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), where she helped the agency design and curate its own weather instruments. During her time, she has helped and overlooked the design of over 100 weather instruments.
Anna Mani also became one of the most renowned scientists in India and later became the head of the division in the IMD.
She also became the Director General of the IMD and also held several key positions in the United Nations World Meteorological Organisation.
