N Chandrasekaran, chief of Tata Sons, appointed Air India chairman

Earlier, the top corporate honcho was re-appointed as the executive chairman of Tata Sons Ltd, which is the holding company & promotor of Rs 110 billion Tata group companies.

New Delhi: Search for the chairman of Air India has finally ended as the Tata Group has zeroed in on none other than Chairman for Tata Sons for the coveted post.

N Chandrasekaran was today appointed as the Chairman of Air India, the airlines whose control was re-acquired from government by Tata Group after 69 years.

Earlier, the top corporate honcho was re-appointed as the executive chairman of Tata Sons Ltd, which is the holding company & promotor of Rs 110 billion Tata group companies.

Mr Chandrasekaran had joined the board of Tata Group in 2016 and subsequently became Chairman for the first time in 2017.

He also chairs the boards of several Tata group companies including Tata Steel, Tata Power, TCS & others.

Earlier this month, the company was in advanced talks to hire Ilker Ayci as the Air India chief but the latter opted out of the offer.

The debt laden Air India was purchased by the Tata Group in October last year, as it won the bid for 100% stake in the airline along with 50% stake in ground handling firm. Out of the 18,000 crore deal, the Tatas had to take over Rs 15,300 crore worth of debt while Rs 2,700 crore was to be paid to govt in cash.
