This July, skywatchers are in for a treat as the first supermoon of 2023, known as the Buck Moon, graces the night sky. On Monday, July 3, the Moon will shine brighter and appear approximately 7 percent larger than usual. In India, this celestial event will be visible at around 5:08 pm on Monday.
What causes a supermoon?
During a full moon, the Sun and the Moon align on opposite sides of the Earth, illuminating the Moon’s entire face. However, due to the Moon’s elliptical orbit, its distance from Earth fluctuates over time. A supermoon occurs when a full Moon coincides with its perigee, the point at which the Moon is closest to Earth. This proximity results in a supermoon appearing approximately 14 percent larger and 30 percent brighter than a full Moon during apogee, when the Moon is farthest from Earth.
