Buck Moon: First supermoon of 2023 illuminates the skies and holds cultural significance

The July supermoon holds the moniker “Buck Moon,” a name derived from Native American folklore that attributed significance to the lunar cycles. Native American tribes observed the Moon’s phases and bestowed names based on natural occurrences and seasonal indicators, aiding in timekeeping, agriculture, and hunting.

New Delhi: The mesmerizing allure of the moon has captivated humanity for centuries, and each month brings a unique lunar spectacle.

This July, skywatchers are in for a treat as the first supermoon of 2023, known as the Buck Moon, graces the night sky. On Monday, July 3, the Moon will shine brighter and appear approximately 7 percent larger than usual. In India, this celestial event will be visible at around 5:08 pm on Monday.

 What causes a supermoon?

During a full moon, the Sun and the Moon align on opposite sides of the Earth, illuminating the Moon’s entire face. However, due to the Moon’s elliptical orbit, its distance from Earth fluctuates over time. A supermoon occurs when a full Moon coincides with its perigee, the point at which the Moon is closest to Earth. This proximity results in a supermoon appearing approximately 14 percent larger and 30 percent brighter than a full Moon during apogee, when the Moon is farthest from Earth.

The Buck Moon’s name can be traced back to the traditions of Native American tribes from the northeastern region of North America. It specifically pays homage to the male deer, commonly known as a buck, as it begins growing its new antlers during this time of the year. The July full moon aligns with the period when the buck’s antlers enter the initial stages of growth, covered in a soft, velvety hair-like substance. It served as a reminder to prepare for the upcoming season, gather resources, and ensure survival during the colder months.

Beyond its practical connotations, the Buck Moon symbolizes growth, strength, and vitality. The deer’s antlers represent a natural cycle of regeneration and renewal, embodying the abundance of life during the summer months.

As sky enthusiasts eagerly await the Buck Moon’s arrival, this celestial event not only provides a breathtaking visual display but also connects us to ancient traditions and the marvels of the natural world. The Buck Moon serves as a reminder of our place in the grand tapestry of the cosmos and invites us to reflect on the cyclical nature of life and the profound beauty of the universe.
