G7 Summit: From black pottery to Nandi themed Dokra art, a peek into PM Modi’s gift to world leaders

PM Modi’s exchange of gifts with the foreign dignitaries gave a reflection of Indian art and culture, and hence became a matter of interest

New Delhi: After attending a successful G-7 summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has concluded his 3-day visit to Germany today.

Modi had arrived in Munich on Sunday, followed by a warm welcome with a fine rainbow and the Bavarian band’s musical welcome at the airport.

The diplomatically-packed visit included his meeting with G-7 top leaders and partner nations on issues like energy, food security, counter-terrorism, and climate change.

Apart from PM Modi’s interaction during an event with the members of the Indian diaspora living in Germany, his interaction with French President Emmanuel Macron over tea, and his meeting with other top leaders are some of the significant picks from the summit.

Here’s a look at PM Modi’s gifts to top world leaders:

1. PM Modi gifted Black Pottery pieces to Japan PM Fumio Kishida

The Black Pottery that PM Modi gifted to his Japanese counterpart are made in Uttar Pradesh’s Nizamabad. The potters use a special technique to bring out a jet black colour to their artifacts, and the color develops on the pots while they are still in the oven.

2. Ramayana themed Dokra art to South Africa President

The Ramayana inspired Dokra art that PM Modi presented to South Africa President Cyril Ramaphosa is from Chattisgarh and is non–ferrous metal casting art, which is made by using lost-wax casting technique. The particular technique has been used in India for over 4,000 years.

3. Nandi themed Dokra Art to Argentina President

Yet another Dokra Art has been presented to Argentina President Alberto Fernández. The artifact is a figure of ‘Nandi –The Meditative Bull’. In the Hindu ideology, Nandi is considered as the vehicle of Lord Shiva.

4. Gulabi Meenakari brooch and cufflink set to US President

PM Modi gifted US President Joe Biden with Gulabi Meenakari brooch and cufflink set form of Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh. Interesting, while making the art-form, pure silver is moulded into a base form, embossed shapes are then filled with great dexterity with crushed meena glass mixed with an intriguing natural anardana (pomegranate seeds) glue.

5. Platinum painted hand painted Tea Set to UK PM

UK PM Boris Johnson was presented with a tea set from Bulandhshahr district to Uttar Pradesh. The crockery has been outlined with platinum metal paint in honour of Her Majesty the Queen’s platinum jubilee being celebrated this year.

PM Modi gifted Itr bottles in zardozi box to France President Emmanuel Macron, which has been hand embroidered on khadi silk & satin tissue in colours of the French National Flag.

7. Marble Inlay table top to Italy PM

PM Modi presented Marble Inlay table top to his Italian counterpart Mario Draghi. The artifact has its origins in Opus sectile- a form of pietra dura popularized in the ancient and medieval Roman world where materials were cut and inlaid into walls and floors to make a picture or pattern.

8. Metal Marodi carving matka to German Chancellor

PM Modi gifted Olaf Scholz with a nickel coated, hand engraved brass vessel from district Moradabad of Uttar Pradesh, also known as the Peetal Nagari or “brass city”.

9. Moonj baskets and cotton durries to Senegal’s President

In Senegal, the tradition of hand weaving is passed down from mother to daughter. Keeping the tradition in mind, PM Modi presented Moonj baskets and cotton durries to Senegal President Macky Sall, which are made in districts of Prayagraj, Sultanpur and Amethi in Uttar Pradesh.

10. Lacquerware Ram Durbar to Indonesia President

In view of Indonesia’s heritage and culture, the Indonesian dignitary Joko Widodo was gifted a wooden Lacquerware Ram Durbar, which has its root in the temple town of Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh.

10. Hand Knotted Indian silk carpet to Canadian PM 

The well-renowned Indian silk carpets are known for their excellent craftsmanship and softness. The Canadian PM Justin Trudeau was presented with a silk carpet made in Kashmir’s Srinagar.
