Photographer who misled people with AI-generated pictures reveals his journey

New Delhi: The photographer Jos Avery, who rose to popularity with his black and white portraits on Instagram, recently revealed his journey to popularity and how he used AI, which was mistaken for being real pictures taken by him. In September last year, he discovered the artificial intelligence program Midjourney which led to his fame. In a recent interview, Jos Avery talked about how he misled people, which led to sleepless nights.

The 48-year-old software engineer and lawyer in the United States fell in love with camera and photography but found Midjourney and became ‘obsessed’ with the creative possibilities. This began with him wondering if he can create AI-generated pictures and pass them as photographs.

Avery said that people did not believe them to be real as the eyes and skin were unrealistic. To tackle the same, he Adobe Photoshop, and as he rose in popularity, people began believing those pictures to be real. He said that people used to ask him about his camera and equipment to which he replied with the equipment he uses for real photos.

He talked about his ‘misleading answers’ making him feel uneasy, and he had trouble sleeping at night. He then decided to tell the specialist website Ars Technica about the same and added ‘Black and white AI’ to his Instagram bio.

Avery told AFP that revealing the truth helped him sleep better but he had to face abuse on the internet.
