New Delhi: Days after assuring Afghanistan of peaceful transition to Sharia law, the Talibani fighters on Thursday opened fire at people waving the national flag at Afghanistan Independence Day rally. Several people have reportedly been killed in the indiscriminate firing by Talibanis.

The firing took place after some people took part in protest rally in Asadabad to raise their voice against Talibani takeover of the country. In some places, Taliban flags were reportedly torn down.

Conflicting reports said that it was yet unclear if casualties were from firing or from the stampede.

“Hundreds of people came out on the streets,” a witness said.

Afghanistan celebrates its 1919 independence from British control on Aug. 19.

On Wednesday, Taliban fighters fired at protesters waving the black, red and green national flag in Jalalabad, killing 3 people, reports said.

Vice President Amrullah Saleh, who has been lending support to the Taliban, expressed support for the protests.

“Salute those who carry the national flag and thus stand for dignity of the nation,” he said on Twitter.
