New Delhi: Prince Charles’ wife Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, will be known as Queen Consort a title that came with Queen Elizabeth II’s blessing after years of contention, days before she married Prince Charles.

This comes after seven decades, that the United Kingdom has a new woman to call queen.

Who is Camilla?

Following Queen’s death, now one of the most important question of what title will Camilla would hold when Charles became king. One of the main reasons behind this is due to sensitivity about her status as she is the second wife of Prince Charles after the death of Princess Diana, his first wife. In 1997, Princess Diana died in a car crash.

What did Queen Elizabeth declare?

The question which was the concern of  many was only resolved when Queen Elizabeth declared that she wanted Camilla to be known as Queen Consort after her son became king.

This is an endorsement that formally signified the royal family’s acceptance of Camilla as a respected senior member and she this was seen as a smooth move by Elizabeth make the way clear for the transition to Charles’ reign.

What Queen had said about Camilla’s power?

Queen Elizabeth had on  February 2022 said when my son Charles becomes king, “I know you will give him and his wife Camelia, the same support that you have given me; and it is my sincere wish that, when that time comes, Camilla will be known as Queen Consort as she continues her own loyal service.”

She had said this when she marked the 70th anniversary of her rule.

It was in 1970, when Camelia had met Charles at polo match, she was only 23 then. Charles was considered as one of the most handsome and eligible bachelor in Britain. Soon, the duo became close, and by the end of 1972, Charles was smitten. But what distracted their romance was Charles’ eight months of naval duty. During this period, Camilla married her long-time boyfriend, an army officer Andrew Parker Bowles, in 1973.

In 1995, the Camelia and Andrew divorced after Charles gave an explosive television interview where he admitted his affair with Camilla. Meanwhile, Charles and Diana divorced the next year.

After waiting for nine long years, Charles and Camilla married  in 2005 in a private ceremony at the Guildhall in Windsor. Since then, Camilla is fulfilling all her royal duties.
