National Education Day is celebrated every year on November 11 to mark the birth anniversary of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad. He was India’s first Education Minister of India under the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru’s cabinet. He played a significant role in shaping up the country’s education system from 1947 to 1958.
He was a prominent leader of the Indian political scenario and freedom movement. He was also a scholar in the field of Urdu Literature. This day celebrates his passion and contribution to the field of education.
National Education Day: History
The Ministry of Human Resource Development which is now the Ministry of Education on September 11, 2008, announced that they have decided to celebrate Maulana Abul Kalam Azad’s birthday as National Education Day. Since, 2008, this is celebrated without calling it a holiday.
Nation Education Day: Significance
According to historians, Abul Kalam Azad had laid the foundation for higher education, technological and scientific research, and education along with the recent emergence of knowledge-based industries. He was also known for promoting research in eastern learning and literature.
Besides, he also set up three academies to develop the fine arts and create socio-religious and cultural inter-linkages in India namely Lalit Kala Academy, Sangeet Natak Academy, and Sahitya Academy.
He strongly advocated for women’s education and compulsory primary education for children up to the age of 14 years. He also contributed to the establishments of IT Kharagpur, University Grants Commission (UGC), Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore, and Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR).
