US set to re-start ‘domestic visa revalidation’, thousands of H-1B visa holders to benefit

In past few months, the Biden administration has stepped up measures to streamline visa processing facility across many countries, as it seeks to re-open the economy for foreign workers.

New Delhi: Post the Corona period, United States (US) has launched a mega reach-out program for those seeking immigration to the country for work, tourism & other activities. Its embassies & consulates in India are working overtime to facilitate visa clearance at the earliest.

In latest visa relief measure, US has decided to resume “domestic visa revalidation” in certain categories. The move will come as a big relief for thousand of Indian tech workers, employed in the States on H-1B & L1 visa.

The move will be taken up on pilot basis from this year end and will be scaled up over next few years. The H-1B visas are issued to foreign workers for a three-year period. It is a non-immigrant visa under which the US companies have the flexibility of employing foreign minds & workers as per the nature of work.

Till 2004, this category of non-immigrant visas, could be renewed in the US. However, after that, the US administration brought a rule under which the tech workers had to visit their native country to get an extension or stamp on their passport, for getting H-1B visa extension.

For now, US is not providing re-stamping facility within its territory. With Biden administration the domestic visa revalidation, it will address the problems & obstacles being faced by H-1B visa aspirants in renewing their visa.

All the H-1B visa holders are required to renew their visa and get their passports stamped with renewal dates, if the wish to travel outside US and then re-enter the country.
