New Delhi: According to official Warner Bros. estimates, Barbie has earned $1.03 billion at the worldwide box office in only three weeks, shattering the record for female filmmakers held by Patty Jenkins, who directed Wonder Woman. It’s the 53rd film ever to make more than $1 billion at the worldwide box office.

The opening weekend for Barbie was a smashing success, earning $356.2 million. Warner Bros. Pictures said on Sunday that the film had earned a total of $1.0315 billion since its debut on July 21. This includes $459 million from North American theatres and another $572.1 million from internationally during the weekend. Comscore, a provider of media analytics, has verified the number.

Warner Bros. Pictures’ Barbie film has surpassed Nintendo’s The Super Mario Bros. to become the year’s second highest-grossing film.

Barbie has surpassed Wonder Woman’s $821.8 million worldwide total to become the highest-grossing film directed by a single woman in the history of the box office, which is not factoring for inflation. There are still three female-directed films that have made more money than Barbie: The Frozen films (both directed by Jennifer Lee; $1.3 billion and $1.45 billion respectively) and the Captain Marvel films (directed by Anna Boden; $1.1 billion).

With $459.4 million domestically (against $426.8 million for Captain Marvel), Barbie has become the highest-grossing live-action film directed by a woman in North America.

On the same day as the release of Barbie, Oppenheimer was also launched, and it has now generated $552 million globally and $28.7 million in North America. The J. Robert Oppenheimer movie starring Cillian Murphy has surpassed Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania in box office earnings after just three weeks in theatres.
