From college, I called my father. My parents were going through a financial hardship. And I just felt like a son who needed to be with my father, even though I didn’t have the qualifications at the moment. To put food on the table, he had to borrow money from his coworkers. I simply felt compelled to be with him. ‘You know dad, I think I want to quit college halfway and come right back and just be with you, try to help you in whatever way I can,’ I told him. At the very least, you’ll know that your boy is close by and ready to help.

2. Jackie Shroff:

I recall how our belongings were sold off one by one. Things I’d grown up witnessing started to vanish around us. Then my bed vanished. I began sleeping on the floor. It was the worst feeling I’d ever experienced.

I had learned martial arts, which helped me get through my difficult period in Bangkok. I started up Muay Thai boxing as a martial-arts aficionado and used to participate in street bouts to supplement my income. I was severely beaten on numerous times, but it was an honest and much-needed wage.

I traveled to Mumbai with three other companions when I first arrived from Delhi. We didn’t have enough money to buy food. On the Queen’s Necklace, we used to sleep on the sidewalk outside the Oberoi Hotel (now Trident). We used to clean up in the hotel’s washrooms in the mornings and pretend to be hotel guests. When we ran out of money to return to Delhi, I went to the local market and sold my Pentax camera for 1500 rupees, allowing us to purchase our return tickets.
