The comedian died while going to US for treatment after long illness. His demise was confirmed by Dr Mohammed Faisal, Pakistan’s Ambassador to Germany.

New Delhi: Umer Sharif, veteran Pakistani artist and a comedian known and loved across adjoining nations passed away in Germany on Saturday. He was 66.

The comedian died while going to US for treatment after long illness. His demise was confirmed by Dr Mohammed Faisal, Pakistan’s Ambassador to Germany.

Pak Ambassador to Germany also tweeted his heartfelt tributes for the legendary comedian.

“With deep sorrow it is announced that Mr. Umer Sharif has passed away. In #Germany. Our deepest condolences to hie family and friends. Our CG is present at the hospital to assist the family in every way,” he posted.


Pak and Indian actors, comedians pay tributes

As the news broke of death of comedy legend, series of Pakistani and Indian artists took to social media to offer their condolences.

Pakistani author Nadeem Farooq Paracha wrote, “One of the sharpest wits in Pakistan Umer Sharif, is no more. He rose from a humble background in Karachi to become a giant in his field. His punchy, ‘awami’ [popular] style of comedy influenced numerous comedians, not only in Pakistan but also in India. May his soul rest in peace.”

Actor-singer Ali Zafar wrote a touching tribute, “Complete loss of words on passing away of the legendary Umar Sharif sahab. May Allah grant him the highest place in Jannah and give his family peace. Ameen.”

Kapil Sharma also took to offer condolences on the loss of comedy star, “Alvida legend. May your soul Rest In Peace.”


Last month, Sharif had undergone treatment at Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) in Karachi after falling seriously ill. A video was also released in which an appeal was made to Pakistan PM for support in his medical treatment.

Sharif garnered immense popularity in the 1980s & 1990s in India and Pakistan as a comedian and stage artist. He also visited India, a couple of times and took part in many comedy events and award functions.
