28-year-old R Priya sworn in as Chennai’s youngest Mayor

Priya is also the first Dalit woman to hold the designation of the mayor of Chennai, and was recently elected as a councilor of ward 74 Mangalapuram

New Delhi: Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)’ R Priya was sworn in as the mayor of Chennai on Saturday.

The 28-year-old councillor happens to be the youngest and the third woman mayor of Chennai.

GCC commissioner Gangandeep Singh Bedi administered the oath of office.

Priya is also the first Dalit woman to hold the designation of the mayor of Chennai, and was recently elected as a councilor of ward 74 Mangalapuram in the civic body polls.

After a hiatus of 11 years, a mayor was sworn into the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) for the first time.
