Atiq & Ashraf’s murder: 5 UP policemen including Shahganj SO suspended

The assailants are currently in police custody and have been identified as Lavlesh Tiwari (22) of Banda, Mohit alias Sunny (23) of Hamirpur, and Arun Maurya (18) of Kasganj.

New Delhi: Days after the murder of gangster-turned politician Atiq Ahmed & his brother Ashraf amidst heavy police presence, the UP government on Wednesday sacked 5 police personnel for ‘dereliction of duty’.

Five police personnel who faced the axe for glaring lapses includes Shahganj Inspector/Station Officer (SO) Ashwani Kumar Singh. The gangster brothers were killed at MLN medical college, where they were taken for medical examination. The area falls under the jurisdiction of this Shahganj police station.

The crackdown on police giving ‘security shied’ to the gangster-politicians comes on back of SIT findings. The SIT formed to probe the sensational killings quizzed all the police personnel including the inspector and submitted a report on the same to state govt. Four other police officers who faced the axe included 2 Sub Inspectors and 2 constables.

Atiq Ahmed & brother Ashraf, both accused of plotting Umesh Pal murder in Prayagraj shootout, were gunned down by three men, who joined the police escort team posing as journalists. They fired multiple bullets from point blank range, killing the gangsters on spot.

Yesterday, an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), who was present at the spot, was also transferred by the state govt.

Following the shocking murder of Atiq & brother Ashraf, despite full police protection, the state govt faced wave of criticism for pitiful law & order situation.

A day later, Yogi formed formed 3-member judicial commission to look into killings of gangster brothers. The commission has been asked to submit report within 2 months while a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was also formed to probe the on-camera murder.
