New Delhi: The by-elections for Asansol Lok Sabha seat in West Bengal was marred by violence on Tuesday as the convoy of BJP candidate Agnimitra Paul came under attack by a group of assailants, allegedly belonging to ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC).

The unidentified miscreants attacked the car of BJP candidate Agnimitra Paul while it was passing through a street and rained lathis on her vehicle indiscriminately.

A video of the attack also landed up on social media, where the goons can be seen targeting the vehicle. When the guards/securitymen of BJP candidate tried to push them away, they were also attacked by the group of miscreants.

BJP nominee Agnimitra Paul blamed the ruling party for ‘lathi attack’ and said that party had unleashed TMC goons on her as it was ‘nervous’ about impending defeat in by-polls. She also blamed the state cops for turning a blind eye to attack.

She also alleged that Bengal Police were in collusion with state machinery and were ‘influencing voters’ to cast ballot for TMC and demanded that central forces remove the state cops.

The violent altercation between securitymen & hooligans raises fresh worry about deteriorating law & order situation in the state.

By-elections for Ballygunge Assembly seats and Asansol Lok Sabha is underway in West Bengal. Asansol is being keenly watched by the political fraternity as heavyweight Shatrughan Sinha is fighting from this seat on TMC ticket. By-poll to Asansol was necessitated as the seat got vacant after Babul Supriyo left the saffron party and joined Mamata-led TMC.

The TMC zeroed in on Shatrughan Sinha as its candidate from Asansol as the constituency has a sizeable population of Hindi-speaking people. Whoever wins the LS constituency will get a ‘booster shot’ ahead of 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
