BJP leader Ashiwini Upadhyay granted bail a day after arrest, in inflammatory slogan-shouting case at Jantar Mantar

The BJP leader found himself in the eye of storm after clamour began for his arrest, as anti-Muslim slogans were reportedly raised in the rally that was organised under his command.

New Delhi: BJP leader Ashwini Upadhyay has been granted bail by the court in case pertaining to inflammatory slogan shouting at Jantar Mantar in the capital.

Upadhyay was remanded to two-day judicial custody by a city court, following which he appealed for bail.

The Supreme Court lawyer has been asked to deposit a surety of Rs 50,000/-. The order was passed by a court of Metropolitan Magistrate Udbhav Kumar Jain.

The BJP leader found himself in the eye of storm after clamour began for his arrest, as anti-Muslim slogans were reportedly raised in the rally that was organised under his command.

According to Delhi Police, he was one of the speakers at the event and whether he was present during the sloganeering or not was under investigation. Delhi Police however opposed his bail plea in the court today.

Senior Advocates including Vikas Singh, Siddharth Luthra and advocate Ashwani Dubey arguing on behalf of SC lawyer and BJP leader told court that Ashwini Upadhayay was not present during the time of the incident. They told court that as per the timing of video, he was not in Delhi but in Ghaziabad.

Delhi Police had arrested Upadhyay & 5 other in connection with the slogan shouting at city’s Jantar Mantar.

Hindustan mein rehna hoga jai shri ram kehna hoga (To stay in India, must say Jai Shri Ram),”  was one of the slogans raised by the group.

The provocative videos sparked outrage and condemnation across circles as the slogans were directed at a particular religion and this happened, barely at barely 2 km distance from the Parliament.
