New Delhi: Hours after party legislator’s arrest, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday suspended T Raja Singh over alleged derogatory remarks against Prophet Muhammad.

The party has also issued him showcause notice asking why he should not be expelled for the blasphemous remarks.

Earlier in the day, T Raja Singh was arrested in Hyderabad for alleged derogatory comments against Prophet Muhammad. The BJP MLA from Goshamahal reportedly uploaded a video with blasphemous remarks on social media.

His arrest followed wide scale protests in the city as large crowd gathered outside police stations protesting against Singh’s remarks. Protests also took place outside the office of Hyderabad Police Commissioner.

In the 10-minute-long video that circulated on social media, the legislator was purportedly slamming stand-up comedian Munawar Faruqui. The MLA said Faruqui insulted Hindu gods time & again and warned of disruption if his event happens in Hyderabad.

The BJP MLA has been booked for making derogatory comments against Prophet & hurting religious sentiments under Sections 295, 505 and 153A of the IPC.

The controversial comments by BJP MLA comes months after former party spokesperson Nupur Sharma’s objectionable remarks left the Muslim community incensed. Following widespread protests in the country, the party suspended Nupur Sharma. She also faces a dozen of cases against her for alleged blasphemy.
