Cases lodged against Sharjeel Imam and the likely punishment

A team of Crime Branch was dispatched same day to Bihar. The team was in touch with Patna and Jahanabad police and was continuously conducting raids.

New Delhi: It was noticed that one Sharjeel Imam, permanent resident of Bihar and student of JNU has been delivering very inflammatory and instigating speeches in his opposition to CAA & NRC. He had previously delivered one such speech in Jamia on 13/12/2019 and thereafter has given one even more inflammatory and instigating speech against the Government, which was being widely circulated on Social media.

These speeches had the potential to harm the religious harmony between different religious segments of the society and also the unity and integrity of India. A case FIR under the following sections of law was registered by SIT Crime Branch on 25/01/2020 for delivering above speeches.

1. Section 124 A IPC: An offence by words, either spoken or written causes disaffection against Government established by law. Punishment imprisonment upto life.

2. Section 153 A IPC: Promoting enmity between different religious groups with an intent to create disharmony. punishment imprisonment extending upto three years.

3. Section 505 IPC: Statements conducing to public mischief.

Punishment: Imprisonment which may extend upto three years.

How Crime Branch nabbed Sharjeel

A team of Crime Branch was dispatched same day to Bihar. The team was in touch with Patna and Jahanabad police and was continuously conducting raids. Yesterday Sharjeel Imam’s brother Muzmil was interrogated.

On the basis of the interrogation, vital clues regarding Sharjeel were obtained. Based upon the leads, the team was successful in apprehending him today at about 2 pm. He has been arrested and his Transit remand is being sought from Ld local Court having jurisdiction. After obtaining Transit remand he will be brought to Delhi.
