Chaos inside Bihar Assembly, Patna streets over police bill; RJD workers-cops clash

The opposition alleges that with this bill, Nitish government wants to turn Bihar into a ‘police state’. The bill was scheduled to be tabled in the state legislature today.

New Delhi: Bihar ruling party and Opposition came at loggerheads today, resulting in major disruption of the state assembly. The loud and forceful uproar by RJD leaders against the ‘draconian’ police bill left the assembly paralysed while on the city streets, party workers and police clashed with each other. Clashes broke out when police tried to stop the RJD supporters marching towards Vidhan Sadha premises in a huge procession.

RJD leaders Tejashwi Yadav and Tej Pratap Yadav were taken into custody.

The opposition alleges that with this bill, Nitish government wants to turn Bihar into a ‘police state’. The bill was scheduled to be tabled in the state legislature today.

RJD tweets ‘assault video’

RJD also tweeted a video from its Twitter handle in which it claimed that police were using force to browbeat its legislators.

The bill allegedly aims at empowering local cops to apprehend people without a specific warrant issued by competent courts.

Earlier in the day, Opposition legislators began raising slogans in protest against the bill at 11 AM.

Speaker Vijay Kumar Sinha’s plea for raising the issue at an appropriate time went unheeded and, in exasperation, he adjourned the proceedings till noon.

At the Dak Bungalow crossing, the RJD leaders were stopped by the police personnel and they retaliated by pelting the security personnel with stones. Water cannons were pressed into use following which the agitators began to disperse.

The bill, which was introduced last week, seeks to rename the Bihar Military Police, give it more teeth and allegedly empowers the force to arrest people without a warrant.
