CM Dhami meets PM Modi, days after promise of UCC implementation in Uttarakhand

Last week, the expert committee, entrusted with the responsibility of drafting the UCC bill told the media that the UCC draft was ready and sent for printing. CM Dhami also said that his govt will soon act to make this into a reality, as soon as he receives the draft.

New Delhi: Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Tuesday met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the capital and reportedly discussed the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), the draft of which has been prepared for the hilly state.

The meeting comes in the backdrop of state government ‘preparing’ to launch one of biggest poll promises of party, a uniform all for all religions.

Notably, the Uttarakhand Chief Minister last week said that the UCC will be implemented in Devbhoomi soon.

Last week, the expert committee, entrusted with the responsibility of drafting the UCC bill told the media that the UCC draft was ready and sent for printing. CM Dhami also said that his govt will soon act to make this into a reality, as soon as he receives the draft.

“As per the promise made to the state’s people, today on June 30, the committee formed to prepare the draft of the Uniform Civil Code has completed its work. Soon Uniform Civil Code will be implemented in Devbhoomi Uttarakhand. Jai Hind, Jai Uttarakhand!” he had tweeted.

Uttarakhand CM also met Home Minister Amit Shah last evening. He reportedly impressed upon the Home Minister about state govt’s arrangements for‘kanwar yatra’.

Uttarakhand draft to be template for Centre’s UCC?

There are reports that the Centre is contemplating replicating ‘major portions’ of the Uttarakhand draft in the Centre’s draft.

Uttarakhand UCC Draft committee chairperson Justice (Retd) Ranjana Prakash Desai, days ago, told media that the idea of UCC was receiving overwhelming support from public.

Chairperson Ranjana Desai told media, “We have tried to bring everyone on an equal footing. The committee has studied existing laws in various countries, including Muslim nations.
