Convert dissolved madrassas into general schools: Newly elected Assam CM directs officials

Sonowal govt had brought a law to convert all state-run madrassas into upper primary, high school and higher secondary schools. The Bill for this ‘conversion’ was passed in the 126-member Assam Assembly on December 30, 2020.

New Delhi: Soon after taking over as the Assam Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday directed officials to begin process for converting dissolved madrassas into general schools.

The move, expected to trigger political row, is one of the first major decisions by newly elected Assam CM. However, the decision to this effect was taken in previous BJP regime only, under Sarbanda Sonowal.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, while giving a direction to immediately initiate the process of transition of dissolved Madrassa to general schools, asked the officials to ensure recruitment of teachers on priority basis particularly in provincialised and government schools and meeting up of periodic gap, reported a leading daily.

Assam CM further asked the department to empower Head of Institutions to periodically and instantly fill up the vacancies on need based basis. The Chief Minister also suggested constituting independent recruitment boards for Poly Technic and Engineering colleges for expeditious filling up of vacancies.

The Chief Minister also directed the officials to ensure that all newly provincialised Teachers and Tutors draw their salary by 1st of June and distribution of Scooty that is pending is completed by 15th of June this year.

Assam has about 729 State-run primary, upper primary and higher secondary madrassas.

The law will however will not be applicable on about 1000 privately run madrassas in the state.
