Delhi LG overrules Kejriwal govt’s order on reserving hospitals for Delhiites only

This decision will bring relief to patients and their families from outside Delhi who are seeking treatment during the coronavirus pandemic.

New Delhi: The Lt Governor Anil Baijal on Monday overruled Kejriwal govt’s order to reserve Delhi government-run and private hospitals in the national capital for Delhiites.

The LG has directed authorities and officials to ensure that Covid-19 treatment at state-run hospitals is not limited to city residents and the facility is extended to anyone and everyone.

This decision will bring relief to patients and their families from outside Delhi who are seeking treatment during the coronavirus pandemic.

LG took the decision in his capacity as the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) chairman. CM Arvind Kejriwal serves as his deputy on the committee. Since he was unwell, Manish Sisodia took part in the meeting on his behalf, reports said.

The move is likely to trigger confrontation between the AAP dispensation and the LG office.

What Kejriwal said on blocking state hospitals for Delhiites

On Sunday, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had announced that the hospitals run by the Delhi government and private entities will only treat Delhiites during the coronavirus crisis.

He said hospitals run by the Centre will have no such restriction, and if people from other states come to the national capital for specific surgeries, they can get medical treatment at private hospitals.

Arvind Kejriwal -

“Over 90 per cent of people want Delhi hospitals to treat patients from the national capital during the coronavirus pandemic. Hence, it has been decided that government and private hospitals in Delhi will only treat patients from the national capital,” Kejriwal had told the media briefing.
