Facebook mistakenly removed #ResignModi; Govt says didn't issue any direction

New Delhi: Facebook, on April 29, explained that it had temporarily blocked posts with the hashtag #ResignModi “by mistake” and the government hasn’t issued any orders to do so.

Social media users noticed that the hashtag #ResignModi was blocked on Facebook and users looking for the hashtag were flashed with a notice saying that such posts had been “temporarily hidden here” as some content in those posts went against the website’s “Community Standards.”

A Wall Street Journal story attributing removal of certain hashtag by FB to GoI‘s efforts to curb public dissent is misleading on facts & mischievous in intent. Govt hasn’t issued any direction to remove the hashtag. FB clarified it was removed by mistake, said Electronics & IT Ministry

It is pertinent to mention that on 5th March 2021 also, Wall Street Journal had published a fake news with heading- “India Threatens Jail for Facebook, Whatsapp and Twitter Employees”. Government had sent an official rebuttal of this completely fake and manufactured story to Wall Street Journal, said Electronics & IT Ministry

Media has a very important role to play in acting as a force multiplier to the efforts of our front-line workers and medical professionals. At a sensitive time like this, we would urge the media to partner with crores of ordinary Indians as we collectively fight the pandemic, added Electronics & IT Ministry
