Former CJI Ranjan Gogoi nominated to Rajya Sabha by President Kovind

The bench headed by him presided over many landmark cases and delivered some crucial judgments like Ayodhya title dispute, Rafale defence deal, entry of women into Sabarimala temple and bringing CJI in RTI Act ambit.

New Delhi: Former Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi has been nominated to Rajya Sabha by President Ram Nath Kovind on Monday.

A notification to this effect was issued by the Central government today.

Gogoi’s tenure as CJI for over 1 year

“In exercise of the powers conferred by the sub-clause (a) of clause (1) of article 80 of the Consitiution of India, read with clause (3) of the article, the President is pleased to nominate Shri Ranjan Gogoi to the Council of States to fill the vacancy caused due to the retirement of one of the nomianted member”, the official statement said.

Ayodhya judgement, among landmark verdict

The bench headed by him presided over many landmark cases and delivered some crucial judgments like Ayodhya title dispute, Rafale defence deal, entry of women into Sabarimala temple and bringing CJI in RTI Act ambit.

Gogoi will be remembered for putting an end to decade long Ayodhya dispute. A five-judge bench headed by him brought an end to the Ayodhya land dispute on November 9.

Other nominated members in the Rajya Sabha are Swapan Dasgupta, Dr. Subramanian Swamy, Dr. Narendra Jadhav , Suresh Gopi, Mrs. Mangte Chungneijang Mary Kom, Sambhajiraje Chhatrapati, Roopa Ganguly, Ram Shakal, Rakesh Sinha, Dr. Sonal Mansingh and Raghunath Mohapatra.
