A sessions court in Gandhinagar on Monday convicted the godman Asamram Bapu of rape, in a complaint lodged against him by her former woman disciple in 2013. His conviction came after almost 9 years of filing of complaint by the Surat based woman.

The Surat-based woman claimed that the preacher repeatedly raped her while she stayed at the ashram in Ahmedabad’s Motera

While pronouncing Asaram guilty in the 2013 rape case, the court however acquitted 6 other accused in the case including Asaram’s wife for lack of evidence.

The rape complaint filed by 2 sisters from Surat was filed separately against Asaram Bapu & his son Narayan Sai.

The two sisters were sexually harassed & raped between the year 2001 to 2006, while being forcibly confined in the Godman’s ashram.

Meanwhile, Asaram’s lawyer has said that they will challenge the sessions court’s order in the Gujarat High Court.

The 81-year-old godman is currently imprisoned in a Jodhpur jail on charges of raping a minor girl at his Rajasthan ashram in 2013. In that case, he was awarded life term.
