Gorakhnath temple attack: Accused Ahmed Murtaza Abbasi given death penalty

Abbasi, an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) graduate had tried to forcibly enter Gorakhnath temple. The accused was caught on camera attacking the two constables of Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) with a sickle.

A special National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Monday handed over death sentence to Ahmad Murtaza Abbasi, who was apprehend by cops over attack on the security personnel stationed at Gorakhnath temple.

The accused Ahmad Murtaza Abbasi had attacked security personnel at famed Gorakhnath temple in Uttar Pradesh in April, last year.

Prashan Kumar, ADG (Law and Order) told media persons that the accused was given death penalty, after being pronounced guilty.

Who is Ahmad Murtaza Abbasi?

The accused Ahmad Murtaza Abbasi is a resident of Gorakhpur city. Having done chemical engineering from IIT-Mumbai in 2015, he went on to work with two private firms.

After his gruesome attack on the PAC outside Gorakhpur temple, he was overpowered by the security men posted there & arrested. However, his family had claimed that he was mentally unwell and was being treated for mental health issues.

Owing to his mental aberrations, he also had strained ties with his wife, even leading to separation, his family had said.

However, the UP police in its investigation revealed that the accused Murtaza Abbasi had taken oath in name of ISIS and was also providing monetary assistance to supporters of terror outfit.
