New Delhi: It’s been just 72 hours that the Gujarat Freedom of Religion (Amendment) Act 2021 or ‘love jihad’ law came into force and the state police have registered the first case in Vadodara.
The accused arrested is as Muslim man who introduced himself as Sam Martin – a Christian to a Hindu girl to marry her.
According to the complaint, Vadodara’s Gotri police registered an FIR and arrested a man named Sameer Qureshi under the Gujarat Independence (Amendment) Act 2021. The law provides for severe punishment for forcible conversion by marriage.
Accused Sameer Qureshi runs the shop with his father, the police official said. He is accused of pretending to be a Christian and cheating on a young woman of another religion. In 2019, the Sameer told the women on social media that his name was Sam Martin.
“The Hindu woman has complained that she was lured into a relationship through Instagram by Samir, who said that he was a Christian, Sam Martin. She has complained that the accused had forced her into physical relationship and had photographed the moments. And he threatened her with making them viral if she did not marry him. They married in 2019,” SV Chaudhary, inspector at Vadodara’s Gotri police station, told IANS.
“The Gotri police have arrested the person under IPC 376, 377, 504, 506(2) and clause (4) of the Gujarat Freedom of Religion (Amendment) Act 2021,” DCP Zone 2 Jayrajsinh Vala of Vadodara told IANS.
