How the luxury apartment collapsed in seconds

The luxury apartments had about 91 flats and were demolished using 212 kg explosives. A total of 300 families were affected due to demolition while 77 families were evicted from the luxurious high-rises. The 10-year old building collapsed in just about 5 seconds and its debris covering nearby areas in concrete dust.

Court battle & their razing to ground

The Maradu luxury flats were brought down after a long legal battle. In September 2019, the Apex Court order sealed the fate of apartment complexes as it ordered to demolish them within 138 days.

The Supreme Court found that all 4 complexes were built in violation of Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) and environmental norms, which allowed construction only beyond 200 metres of the high tide line. These waterfront apartments were built too close to the Vembanad lake in Maradu.
