INS Vagir, the ‘Made in India’ submarine that will add teeth to Indian Navy

INS Vagir is the 3rd submarine to be inducted in Indian Navy in just 2 years and this shows India’s very-capable shipyards in rolling out complex & sophisticated structures.

New Delhi: In a major boost to India’s naval power, INS Vagir, the 5th submarine of Kalvari Class submarines was commissioned into Indian Navy on Monday, in presence of Chief of Naval Staff Admiral R Hari Kumar.

The homegrown submarine has been made under Project-75, which has already delivered or is in process of building 6 indigenous submarines of Scorpene design.

Vagir’s ‘first’ commissioning in 1973

Submarine with the same name was commission in the Indian Navy in 1973 and that served the naval forces for almost 3 decades, before getting de-commissioned in 2001.

Now, with the indigenous submarine getting into the waters, it will uplift add more teeth to India’s maritime security. It also the distinction of being the indigenous submarine made in record time, till date.

The scorpene has been built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited, Mumbai based company and used French expertise as part of technology transfer deal.

What does ‘Vagir’ mean

Vagir derives its name from Sand fish, which is considered a deadly sea predator of Indian Ocean.

Serving as a formidable protector of sea, the submarine will undertake many role in its operation including anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, intelligence gathering & surveillance mission.

How Submarine will add power to Navy

The Navy in a release said that INS Vagir is equipped with most advanced features and will go a long way in neturalizing enemies. It can fire surface-to-surface missiles and also be used for launching marine commandoes during special operations and stealth missions.

For its own defence, the submarine has a special torpedo decoy system.
