Jahangirpuri demolition unites Opposition, Rahul & Owaisi slam ‘bulldozers of hate’

The demolition of illegal structures & encroachments led to a political showdown with Opposition tearing into the Centre for razing houses without giving any notice.

New Delhi: The anti-encroachment drive by the New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) in Delhi’s Jahangirpuri area has drawn strong reactions from Opposition parties. From Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi, both launched no-holds barred attack on the Centre for its ‘divisive & motivated action’ against certain section of society.

Several bulldozers came rushing down in the riot-hit Jahangirpuri area in the morning and have been demolishing all the illegal structures in the area. Many illegal shops, houses & all illegal encroachments are being razed by the bulldozers.

The demolition of illegal structures & encroachments led to a political showdown with Opposition tearing into the Centre for razing houses without giving any notice.

Taking to Twitter, Rahul Gandhi urged Modi govt to ‘switch off bulldozers of hate and switch on the power plants’.

AIMIM chief Owaisi also hit out at the Centre and said that BJP-led government was on ‘a mission’ to destroy homes of Muslims & punishing them for no fault. Tagging Delhi Chief Minister, he also hit out at Arvind Kejriwal and said that his role in the whole drive is also dubious.

Owaisi slams BJP & AAP both

Owaisi took turns to launch scathing attack on the BJP as well as AAP. He said that BJP has launched a war against the attack while asked Kejriwal govt to clarify on his betrayal of the Muslim community. “Did people of Jehangirpuri vote for him for such betrayals & cowardice?” he tweeted.

BJP welcomes move

Meanwhile, a couple of BJP leaders have welcomed the demolition of illegal structures by bulldozers. It was Delhi BJP chief who wrote to North Delhi Mayor Iqbal Singh to identify and demolish illegal construction and encroachment in the Jahangirpuri violence.

Meanwhile, the NDMC has said that it was a routine demolition drive. A similar drive was conducted few days ago but the illegal structures again sprang up. About 400 policemen were deputed for carrying out demolition drive.

After Supreme Court’s order on status quo, the razing of illegal structures have stopped but lot of police personnel are deployed in the area.
