Jilted lover plotted Indore building blaze that killed 7 people, nabbed by cops

Police reported that Dixit, hailing from Jhansi was angry with a woman, who used to live with her mother in the Swarnbagh Colony building for deciding to marry some other man.

New Delhi: On Saturday, a 28-year-old man allegedly set a building on fire in Indore killing seven and injuring nine. He has been arrested by the Madhya Pradesh police on Sunday. According to the police, the accused wanted to get back a woman living in the building who was reportedly in a relationship with him, however, broke up and decided to marry someone else.

Shubham Dixit also known by the name Sanjay was arrested on Saturday late night from Lohamandi. He tried to flee and injured his leg and a hand. Tehzeeb Qazi, police station in-charge of Vijay Nagar stated that he was admitted owing to the injury and was later arrested.

He was produced in court on Sunday.

Police reported that Dixit, hailing from Jhansi was angry with a woman, who used to live with her mother in the Swarnbagh Colony building for deciding to marry some other man. Dixit told the police that they were in a relationship and also lent her Rs 10,000. However, she recently got engaged to someone else.

“Late on Friday night, he called the woman for the money. The conversation (near the building) soon turned into a bitter argument. He threatened her. Later, he came to the parking area of the building, took out petrol from a bike, poured it on the woman’s scooty and set it afire,” said Qazi.

Also on checking at least 100 CCTV footage during the investigation and they found out that a man was entering the building and later came out of the building setting the two-wheeler on fire. The man also tried destroying the CCTV camera and also the electricity metre. Besides, the man was again seen at the crime scene a few minutes later to check the result. By then, the fire had spread to the building, reported the police officer.

Meanwhile, the woman and her mother came out of the building with the help of rope on Saturday. Police stated that they will register a statement of the woman who did not disclose her argument with the man earlier.

Indore police commissioner HN Mishra said, “The accused Shubham Dixit said he just wanted to set the scooty on fire because the woman cheated on him and he didn’t know the consequences.”

Also during the investigation, Mishra and the team came to know that Dixit has cases registered against him in Delhi as well. “We will request the court for police remand to interrogate him,” he said.
