Kerala: Noted Dancer Neena Prasad ‘insulted’, stopped from performing Mohiniyattam on stage

Neena took to Facebook to reveal that police personnel came rushing to stop her performance inside the school as the sound appeared ‘nuisance’ to the judge.

New Delhi: The artistic community is indignant & incensed at the humiliation meted out to noted dancer Neena Prasad at an event in Kerala.

The renowned dancer was performing a Mohiniyattam sequence at a govt school in Palakkad, when she was stopped mid-way, on the orders of district judge Kalam Pasha

Neena took to Facebook to reveal that police personnel came rushing to stop her performance inside the school as the sound appeared ‘nuisance’ to the judge. The judge, who resides near the school, objected to the show and as per reports he forced the organisers to halt the program.

Police stopped the hour-long performance titled ‘Sakhyam’. The much public humiliation of the dancer & her team left them in tears.

Taking to Facebook, Neena described the episode as ‘insulting’ and said that it was for the first time that she felt so humiliated.

“As an artiste and woman, I felt humiliated and I would like to record my protest. The district judge had asked the organisers to stop the event as he was having trouble with the music,” she wrote in Facebook post.

According to her post, police asked her to stop performance within minutes of starting.

The BJP has taken strong exception to the ignominious treatment of noted dancer. State party president V Muraleedharan took to Twitter and likened the incident to ‘Talibanisation of Kerala’ while hitting out the CM Pinarayi Vijayan.

“No artistic freedom under communist rule. Stopping Ms. Neena Prasad’s Mohiniyattam performance – Kerala’s own dance form abruptly – is an insult to Kerala,” he said.

The show was organised by the Sekharipuram Grandhasala, where the book Ithihasangale Thedi authored by Sreechitran MJ, was also released.
