The Union Cabinet approved a bill that will enable the linking of Aadhaar to voter ID cards on Wednesday. This was one of the main proposals pushed by the Election Commission of India (ECI). The bill will allow individuals exercising their franchise for the first time to get at least four turns to register in a year. Currently, the individuals who are turning 18 on or before January 1 of every year can register as voters only once. Besides, the electoral law will be made gender-neutral for service voters. Also, linking Aadhaar to voter ID cards through National Voter Service Portal, SMS, phone, or by visiting the booth-level officers is possible.

Below are the steps to link Aadhaar card to Voter ID through National Voter Service Portal:

Step 1: Visit the portal

Step 2: Login using your mobile number/email ID/Voter ID Number and enter password

Step 3: Enter state, district, and personal details such as name, date of birth, and father’s name.

Step 4: After filling in details click on the ‘Search’ button. If the details entered by you match the government database, then the details will appear on the screen.

Step 5: Click on the ‘Feed Aadhaar No’ option that will be visible on the left side of the screen

Step 6: A pop-up page will appear where you will have to fill in your name as mentioned in the Aadhaar card, Aadhaar number, voter ID number, registered mobile number, and/or registered email address.

Step 7: After entering all details correctly, cross-check it once, and press the ‘Submit’ button.

Step 8: A message will appear on the screen saying that your application has been registered successfully.

You just need to dial 1950 on weekdays between 10 am to 5 pm and share your voter ID card number and Aadhaar card information to link the two.

The booth level officer will verify all the details submitted by you. He/She may even visit your residence for verification. Once verified, it will be reflected in your records.

How to check status if Aadhaar card is linked with Voter ID?

You can check the status of your application by visiting the NVSP website. Then enter the details as stated under the section ‘Seeding Through NVSP Portal.’ A notification will be sent stating the request has been registered and is under process will appear.
