‘Our vaccines may become ineffective against Omicron’, says VK Paul

There is a potential scenario that our vaccines may become ineffective in emergent situations. Issues in the efficacy of vaccines must be addressed.

New Delhi: As the Omicron cases spread fast in the country and across the world, Niti Aayog member Dr. Vinod Kumar Paul today hinted that the latest strain may render vaccines ineffective, if it continues to grow at a brisk pace.

Mr Paul, also the Covid Task Force chief made the remarks regarding ‘declining’ efficacy of existing Covid-19 vaccines on a private TV channel on Tuesday.

While talking to the media, Paul said that there is an issue in the efficacy of vaccines that must be addressed.

“There is a potential scenario that our existing vaccines may become ineffective in emergent situations, hence there is a need to create vaccines using the same platform to target variant suspect,” Mr Paul said.
