Yesterday, the UP police released pictures of 40 people who were caught on camera hurling stones at the police officials. It was pasted at several places across the city and people were urged to share information about their whereabouts, if they come across one.

The UP police crackdown on Kanpur’s trouble mongers has come under scrutiny with many hailing the decision as reformatory, however, many vented ire against making their identity public claiming that this will create further divide.

Earlier also, when the rioters amassed on streets and vandalised public property & indulged in stone-pelting, opposing the roll-out of CAA, the police had adopted this practice of adopting naming & shaming strategy. Posters were displayed at many cross-sections of the state. Parties like Owaisi’s AIMIM saw it as ‘persecution of Muslims’ but the state govt rejected them as canards being spread to tarnish its image.
