Presidential Election 2022: Here is how India elects its President

This year, a total of 776 MPs and 4,033 MLAs will take part in the Presidential Elections. The total value of votes is 10,86,431 of which MLAs will account for 5,43,231 votes and MPs for 5,43,200.

New Delhi: India will elect its new President by July 21, as the term of incumbent Ram Nath Kovind is set to end on July 24. The Election Commission announced the polling date for Presidential Election on July 18.

In 75 years of Independence, political parties have largely maintained a precedent of selecting the President by consensus and not by contesting election.

Election of President

The election of President happens as per the clauses of Article 55 of the Constitution. The President of India is elected by members of the Electoral College, comprising of elected member of Parliament (MPs) and Member of Legislative Assemblies (MLAs) including the NCT of Delhi & the UT of Puducherry. It follows the system of proportional representation.

The nominated members of Parliament and members of legislative council are not eligible to vote, as they don’t come under the Electoral college.

If an elected representative holds any office of profit under the Government of India or the Government of any State or under any local authority, his/her vote will not be counted.

Step by Step process

Nomination by the contesting candidate is the first step towards election to highest constitutional office. The candidate must get his nomination subscribed by at least 50 electors as proposers and 50 as seconders. The candidate is also required to deposit security, which is ₹15,000. More than 4 nomination papers can not be filed by any candidate or on behalf of him.

Voting process & venue

Voting for the Presidential election takes place in the Parliament and premises of State Assemblies, where MPs & MLAs cast their vote respectively. Rajya Sabha Secretary-General serves as the Returning Officer.

The election follows proportional voting which means that each vote carries a value. This year, the total number of electors for the election will be 4,809 – 776 MPs and 4,033 MLAs.
