Rahul Gandhi gears up to address No-Confidence motion on Tuesday

Scheduled for Tuesday, this session holds considerable political significance. Gandhi’s return to the parliamentary arena was facilitated by the Supreme Court’s stay on his conviction in the ‘Modi surname’ defamation case from 2019.

New Delhi: Anticipation is building as Congress leader Rahul Gandhi prepares to take the floor and deliver a significant speech during the imminent no-confidence motion against the Narendra Modi-led government in the Lok Sabha. Scheduled for Tuesday, this session holds considerable political significance. Gandhi’s return to the parliamentary arena was facilitated by the Supreme Court’s stay on his conviction in the ‘Modi surname’ defamation case from 2019.

Rahul Gandhi, representing the Wayanad constituency in Kerala, has had his membership reinstated in the Lok Sabha following the Supreme Court’s decision. With his renewed status, he is poised to play a pivotal role in opening the debate on the no-confidence motion from the Congress party’s standpoint.

Earlier this year, in March, the 53-year-old leader faced disqualification as an MP after a Gujarat court found him guilty in a defamation case. The verdict emanated from a complaint lodged by BJP MLA and former Gujarat minister Purnesh Modi in 2019. The contentious remark, “How come all thieves have Modi as the common surname?” was made by Rahul Gandhi during an election rally in Kolar, Karnataka.

Legal proceedings ensued, leading to his conviction and a two-year jail sentence. Crucially, under existing laws, any sentence exceeding two years leads to the automatic disqualification of a lawmaker.

With the Lok Sabha officially reinstating his status as a Member of Parliament, Rahul Gandhi promptly arrived at the Parliament House. Prior to entering the legislative chamber, he paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi’s statue with a wreath-laying ceremony. His arrival was greeted with warmth by fellow Congress members and opposition parliamentarians alike.

The atmosphere at the All India Congress Committee (AICC) headquarters in New Delhi was electrifying as news of his return reverberated. Party enthusiasts celebrated with exuberant dancing and resounding slogans, rallying in support of Gandhi.

Beyond the parliamentary floor, Rahul Gandhi also made a notable change to his social media presence. On X, formerly known as Twitter, he updated his bio, transforming it from “Dis’Qualified MP” to “Member of Parliament.” Additionally, his updated profile reflects his affiliation with the Indian National Congress.
