Snatched INSAS Rifles of Meghalaya Police recovered from Wah Umkhrah river: CM Conrad Sangma

A curfew was enacted in the state after a former Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) leader, Cheristerfield Thangkhiew was allegedly killed in an encounter on August 13.

New Delhi:  Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Monday said that with the State Rescue Team (SRT) of the Meghalaya Fire and Emergency Services and the district police today recovered the three INSAS rifles at Wah Umkhrah.

The rifles were seized at Umshing-Mawkynroh Police Outpost on August 15.

The search operation was carried out by the  SRT team after an anonymous letter claiming that the three rifles were dumped into Umkhrah.

The search was carried out after an unsigned letter was sent to the headman of Mawlai area with a copy to Superintendent of Police of East Khasi Hills district on August 20.

The letter said that  three rifles were tossed into the Wahumkhrah river from a bridge across it.

The miscreants not only  snatched the weapons but they also hijacked and vandalised an SUV.

The miscreants also  torching the vehicle after driving the vehicle across the city.
