Talking about the contours of UCC, the Chief Minister said, “During election campaign, we had promised to implement Uniform Civil Code. After elections, we passed it in first after consensus. Committee will prepare a draft soon and we will implement it”

New Delhi: Pushkar Dhami-led Uttarakhand government on Friday announced formation of a drafting committee to implement the much-debated Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state.

According to the govt notification, the panel will be headed by retired Supreme Court judge Ranjana Desai while retired Delhi High Court judge Pramod Kohli, ex-state chief secretaries Shatrughan Singh, Manu Gaud and Surekha Dangwal will be members of it.

Talking about the contours of UCC, the Chief Minister said, “During election campaign, we had promised to implement Uniform Civil Code. After elections, we passed it in first after consensus. Committee will prepare a draft soon and we will implement it”

The committee will give a detailed report on all laws relating to marriage, divorce, property rights, succession, adoption, maintenance and protection.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami

Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami confirmed state government has taken a decision to implement the UCC in the state.

“We have taken a decision to implement the Uniform Civil Code in the state. Uttarakhand will be the second state after Goa to implement this. We will bring UCC for the people irrespective of them being from any religion and sect,” he said in Champawat.

Meanwhile, the Muslim groups have taken objection to rolling out of such scheme. All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) termed it unconstitutional & anti-minorities move and said that this was being brought to drive a wedge between the communities and it will only spread rancour & bitterness in society.

The UCC has been one of the top agenda for BJP’s election manifesto. In 2019 elections also, it promised implementation of UCC.
