‘We will hold Savarkar Gaurav Yatra…’: CM Eknath Shinde condemns Rahul Gandhi’s remarks

While all Hindutva parties are criticising him, Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde announced a ‘Savarkar Gaurav Yatra’ in the state to counter Gandhi’s statements.

New Delhi: Rahul Gandhi has faced a backlash for his remarks on VD Savarkar in a press conference. While all Hindutva parties are criticising him, Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde announced a ‘Savarkar Gaurav Yatra’ in the state to counter Gandhi’s statements. Shinde, who is the current flagbearer of Hindutva politics in the state, condemned Rahul Gandhi’s remarks on Savarkar.

In a press briefing, CM Shinde said that Savarkar played a ‘great role’ in the country’s freedom struggle and due to the contribution of such heroes, our country got freedom. He added that they will hold ‘Savarkar Gaurav Yatra’ in every district of the state.

The motive behind the ‘yatra’ is to talk about the contributions of VD Savarkar and protest against those who insult him.

Rahul Gandhi also faced a backlash from Uddhav Thackeray and his faction for his remarks. While it was the only matter where the two factions of Shiv Sena stood together, quoting Balasaheb Thackeray’s incident, CM Shinde took a jibe at Uddhav. Eknath Shinde said that Balasaheb Thackeray thrashed the effigy of then Union Minister Mani Shankar Aiyar with shoes and questioned will Uddhav Thackeray do the same to Rahul Gandhi.

It is to be noted that Uddhav Thackeray’s government was in power in a coalition with Congress and NCP.

Rahul Gandhi

In a press conference, when asked will Rahul Gandhi apologise for his remarks on ‘Modis’ for which he was convicted in the Surat court, the former MP replied that he is not Savarkar, he is Gandhi. Rahul Gandhi also launched an attack on VD Savarkar during Bharat Jodo Yatra where he showed one of Savarkar’s apologies to the British government.

While Savarkar’s contributions to the freedom struggle and his apology to the Britishers are a matter of debate, Eknath Shinde and his supporters hold him close like their “God”. Shinde even asked Rahul Gandhi to stay in Andaman jail for one day.
