New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday arrested Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Anubrata Mondal in a 2020 cattle smuggling case. After TMC minister Partha Chatterjee’s arrest in school jobs scam, this is another big arrest of the party leader and someone who enjoys close links with Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee.

The TMC leader was summoned before the agency multiple times before being apprehended. Every time, he cited health issue to avoid direct confrontation.

TMC leader Anubrata Mondal is party’s Birbhum district president. He is said to be have close link with CM Mamata Banerjee.

Reports suggest that he was the one who popularized TMC’s pet slogan ‘Khela Hobe’ in the 2021 Assembly election. This was the party’s battle cry that worked wonders and ensured TMC’s landslide victory in Assembly polls.

Mondal has worked assiduously to make a place for himself in Mamata’s good books. He is said to be a staunch loyalist of Didi and has been suitably rewarded with a place in TMC National Working Committee.

Has Mondal been under police scanner before?

Mondal likes to stay behind the scenes and someone who keenly prepares boardroom strategy and ensures its implementation with precision.

He has been a key person in brainstorming TMC’s expansion strategy.

He has been linked to many controversies before. In the past, his polarizing statements sparked off major row. He has openly threatened police before and accused of instigating TMC cadres to ‘hurl bombs’ at them.

Local reports suggest that he maintains links with those at the helm of sand mining, stone quarrying & cattle smuggling in Birbhum region. He is seen as the ‘protective force’ of goons operating in these sectors.

During campaigning, he is said to have issued open threats to Opposition candidates.
