New Delhi: On the occasion of World Environment Day 2022, which falls on 05.06.2022, Delhi State Legal Services Authority (DSLSA) in association with various departments and organizations is celebrating “Environment Literacy Week” from 29.05.2022 till 05.06.2022. This year World Environment Day assumes greater significance as it marks 50 years since the Stockholm Conference, which led to the designation of June 5 as the World Environment Day.
DSLSA launched “Environment Literacy Week” on 29.05.2022 with Environment Literacy Programmes and the setting up of Suksham Van/Micro forests at Asola Bhati Wildlife Sanctuary, Delhi. DSLSA organised a one-day workshop on Environment Protection for the Legal Aid Counsels on 01.06.2022 at NDMC Convention Centre, Palika Kendra, Sansad Marg, New Delhi, to sensitize the Legal Aid Counsels and Para Legal Volunteers about Environmental legal issues and also encourage them to adopt environment-friendly lifestyles so that we achieve the hitherto elusive dream of sustainable development. This event was graced by eminent resource persons including Senior Advocates of the Supreme Court of Delhi and Environmental Activists and attended by 115 Legal Aid Counsel, 55 Para Legal Volunteers, and 30 Law Students.
DSLSA in collaboration with the Directorate of Education, GNCTD, and Association of Indian Universities (AIU) also organised Webinar on the topic “Environment Legal Literacy Zero Waste Life Style” on 2nd and 3rd June 2022 by conducting specific sessions for creating awareness amongst professors, teachers, and students about their legal rights, which have been viewed by approximately 3 lac persons till now.
DLSAs across Delhi have also undertaken a kaleidoscope of activities during the Environment Literacy Week and organised Nukkad Nataks, setting up of Suksham Van and Clothes Donation Drives, Sensitization Programs, etc. in their respective areas, and have planted about 15000 saplings by now.
The Culmination Ceremony of the “Environment Literacy Week” was held on 5th June 2022 at Tihar Jail Complex, where vertical gardens made from plastic bottles and a workshop for skill development of jail inmates (between 18 and 221 years of age) is currently underway. In addition, a “Suksham Van” has also been set up at Tihar Jail. The event was graced by Hon’ble Mr. Justice Navin Chawla, Judge, High Court of Delhi in the auspicious presence of Principal District & Sessions Judges, Director General (Prisons), and Shri Rohit Mehra, IRS & Mrs. Geetanjali Mehra (popularly known as Green Couple).
