Being Christmas Eve today, all the preparation goes around for the grand day that is December 25. Notably, December 25 is celebrated worldwide to honour the birth of Jesus Christ. Originally known as Yuletide, Christmas is celebrated by decorating the Christmas trees with bells and stars, decorating the room with fairy lights and gathering around the tree, and singing Christmas carols, religious folk songs about Christmas. Here are five popular carols that you might enjoy:

We wish you a Merry Christmas

This is undoubtedly the most popular Christmas carol ever. ‘We wish you a merry Christmas’ is an old song whose popular version was created by musician Arthur Warrell, from Bristol. The carol was first performed by him in a concert arrangement on December 6, 1935 at at the University of Bristol with its Madrigal Singers.

Jingle all the way

This can be considered as the second most popular carol. The song was originally composed as a Thanksgiving song and not a Christmas carol. The song became so popular that children started to sing during Christmas. The song was composed by James Lord Pierpont, around 1850, and was originally called One Horse Open Sleigh.

Gaudete

This is a Latin Christmas carol, which means ‘rejoice.’ It is believed that the song was written around the 16th century. The song was first published in Piae Cantiones, a collection of late Medieval Latin songs compiled by one clergyman named Jacobus Finno. However, the author of the song is unknown.

O Holy Night

This song is adapted from a French poem by Placide Cappeau, composed by Adolphe Adam in 1847. This Christmas carol was translated into English by John Sullivan Dwight in English, in 1855. Mariah Carey’s rendition of the carol is the most popular.

Joy to the world

The song was written by Isaac Watts in 1719. The song is the author’s interpretation of Psalm 98 of the Book of Psalms. The musical tunes of the song have been composed by Lowell Mason’s 1848 composition.
