Google Doodles celebrate French painter Rosa Bonheur’s Birth Anniversary-Who is she?

Bonheur’s reputation as an animal painter and sculptor grew in the 1840s. Many of her works were exhibited at the prestigious Paris Salon

New Delhi: On Wednesday, search engine giant Google celebrated the 200th birth anniversary of French painter Rosa Bonheur, one of the most prominent female artists during the 19th century.

Google Doodle paid homepage to the legendary animalier and sculptor, whose artwork and successful career inspired a future generation of women in the arts, with a beautiful graphic.

The special animated graphic features a figurine of Rosa Bonheur painting a flock of sheep on canvas.

Who was Rosa Bonheur?

Rosa Bonheur was born on March 16, 1822, in Bordeaux city of France. Her father, himself a landscape painter, aided her primary education.

Although Bonheur’s longing for education and a career in art was rather extraordinary for women of her time. She spent years of careful study and closely following the development of artistic traditions before the sketches were immortalized on canvas.

Bonheur’s reputation as an animal painter and sculptor grew in the 1840s. Many of her works were exhibited at the prestigious Paris Salon from 1841 to 1853.

Significant Artworks and Awards

In 1853, Bonheur gained international fame with his painting “The Horse Fair”, which depicted a horse market held in Paris. As his best-known portrait, this painting is on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

To honor this famous painting, the French Empress Eugenie awarded the Legion of Honour, one of the country’s most prestigious awards, to Bonheur in 1865.
