Halal or Jhatka?: Restaurants, shops in South Delhi must display kind of meat served, says SDMC

South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) had made the proposal in December last year stating that consuming halal meat is considered “forbidden and against religion in Hinduism and Sikhism.”

New Delhi: The South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) on Wednesday passed a proposal that makes it mandatory for restaurants and meat shops to write ‘halal ‘ or ‘jhatka’ for the kind of meat being served and sold.

“Many people do not eat jhatka meat while others don’t eat halal but in restaurants, you cannot tell the meat type being served. You may find halal or jhatka meat written on the meat shops but such a practice is rare in restaurants. So it is a healthy exercise to mention whether halal or jhatka meat is being served at restaurants,” Narendra Chawla, leader of the House in SDMC, said.

The civic body had made the proposal in December last year stating that consuming halal meat is considered “forbidden and against religion in Hinduism and Sikhism.”

According to the SDMC, appropriate action is likely to be taken against those found violating the rules.

‘Halal’ means “permissible” in Arabic. Food items made from ‘halal’ meat are certified to be permissible for Muslims to eat. ‘Jhatka’ is another method of slaughtering an animal.

A similar proposal is already in place in shops and restaurants under East Delhi Municipal Corporation areas, reports a leading daily.
