India to host Women’s Cricket World Cup in 2025, ‘step in the right direction’ says Ganguly

However, India hosted the women’s world cup in 1978, 1997 and 2013, and all three were won by the Aussies.

New Delhi: Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced that India will be hosting the 2025 Women’s Cricket World Cup. It is a big moment as it will be the fourth time that India will be hosting the tournament. With the inclusion of Women’s cricket in the Commonwealth games 2022 and BCCI, one of the richest cricket boards, taking up as the hosts is good news for cricket.

The last world cup was held in New Zealand, where Australia lifted their 7th title. However, India hosted the women’s world cup in 1978, 1997 and 2013, and all three were won by the Aussies. The 2025 World Cup is also likely to be Harmanpreet Kaur’s first World Cup as a captain.

Sourav Ganguly, the President of BCCI, said, “We were keen on hosting the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 and we are glad we have won the hosting rights for this marquee clash on the women’s calendar.” He added, “The popularity of women’s cricket is rapidly rising and this is a step in the right direction.”

BCCI’s Honorary Secretary Jay Shah is ready to make it a memorable event for all cricket fans. He said, “We are delighted to host the 2025 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup and let me tell you that BCCI will leave no stone unturned to make it a memorable event for everyone concerned.”

The announcement was made by the BCCI Women’s official Twitter handle as they shared a picture of the cup.

Though India has never won one, the team has done well in the tournament. India has entered the finals on two occasions, the first one came in South Africa in 2005 and the second one was in England in 2017. To date, only three nations have managed to lift the cup, Australia has done it 7 times, England 4 times and New Zealand won their only cup in 2000.
