Ravichandran Ashwin now India’s 3rd highest wicket-taker in international cricket

The off-spinner now has 689 international wickets to his name and is just behind Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh among his Indian counterparts.

New Delhi: Ravichandran Ashwin picked three wickets on the morning of day 2 in the Indore Test and surpassed Kapil Dev in the tally of the most number of international wickets. With Nathan Nylon’s wicket, Ashwin wrapped up the Australian inning and made yet another record moving ahead to get a legendary status in the game.

The off-spinner now has 689 international wickets to his name and is just behind Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh among his Indian counterparts. Kumble has 956 and Singh has 711 international scalps to their names. Ashwin achieved this record in his 269th international game while Kapil Dev played a total of 356 international matches.

Meanwhile, overall Ashwin stands in the 17th number on the list of total international wickets and Muthiah Murlidaran with his 1347 wickets tops the list.

Ashwin’s success in Tests has a lot of credit to his records and recently he also surpassed Kapil Dev in the number of Test wickets. He has been one of the crucial bowlers of India’s white-ball side too and his recent comeback into the ODI and T20I sides gave him another opportunity to add more wickets to his tally.

In the game, Australia pushed to a lead of 88 runs after dismissing India for 109. Peter Handscomb and Cameroon Green tried to take away the game with their 40-run stand, which was finally broken by Ravi Ashwin as Shreyas Iyer took a sharp catch on the short leg to dismiss Handscomb.

Ashwin and Umesh Yadav picked three wickets each to wrap Australia for 197. Where no pacer could pick a wicket and spinners ruled the track, Umesh bowled Starc and Murphy while trapping Green lbw.
