Sunil Gavaskar scolds a fan asking about Ashwin’s exclusion from the Asia Cup 2023 squad

The former India captain believes a perfectly balanced squad has been picked by the BCCI selection committee. He even believes this team can win world cup.

New Delhi: Since the BCCI selection committee released their squad list for the upcoming Asia Cup 2023 on Monday, there has be constant outbursts among the fans and cricket experts.

While many of the experts and fans believe that there are several players who deserved a spot on the team have been overlooked, some believe this is the perfect team going ahead for the tournament.

One such cricket expert is former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar. According to Gavaskar, this is a perfectly balanced team and all the players selected deserved their spot on the team. Including players like Iyer and Rahul, who are given a spot in the team right after coming back from the injury.

Even though, there were questions about all the departments like, Rahul and Iyer getting direct entry in the team or out of form SKY and newcomer Tilak Verma being preferred over Sanju Samson who has a 50+ average in ODI cricket.

But the biggest heat that was raining down on BCCI was because of their choice about the selection of spinners. In the 17 members squad selected for the tournament only one wrist spinner was selected and also there were no off-spinner in the team as well.

BCCI and Captain Rohit Sharma justified their selection by saying; they wanted someone who can also bat at no 8. This was the only reason Shardul and Axar were preferred over Chahal.

However, on his interview with Aaj Tak, a fan asked Gavaskar that, could BCCI have gone with Washington Sundar or Ashwin. Since both are off-spinner and can also bat.

Gavaskar did not like this response from the fan and asked him not to spread any controversy and accept the fact that this is our team. He also said if you do not like the team do not watch the matches but, please refrain from spreading a controversy.

Gavaskar also said that he does not feel anyone has been wronged here and the in-form experienced players are picked in the squad. Gavaskar also added that he strongly believes that this team can not only win Asia Cup. But, they can also win the ICC Cricket World Cup which is going to be held in India later this year.
