Premier League: United’s roller coaster ride again on a high after derby win

The match which took place at City’s home ground ended the remarkable 21-game unbeaten streak of the hosts

New Delhi: In a shocking turn of events, Manchester United defeated Premier League leaders Manchester City by 2-0 on Sunday. The match which took place at City’s home ground ended the remarkable 21-game unbeaten streak of the hosts. Fernandes and Shaw were the stars of the night.

United got the lead just after 35 seconds when Jesus tripped Martial inside the box giving United a chance from the spot. Fernandes, who rarely misses scored the first goal for United, making City trail for the first time in their past 20 games. City were in a very bad form, as even De Bruyne was giving away the possession. It took City 20 minutes to find their rhythm, but things were just not in their favour, as the duo of Maguire and Victor Lindelof was in a phenomenal form. So, was the English keeper Henderson whose performance in the derby raise even more questions about the future of David De Gea.

But the man who took everybody’s attention was Luke Shaw. Shaw has started to become the lethal attacking left-back that United needed for a long time. Shaw has come a long way from being the guy who was always crticised by ex-manager Mourinho to becoming the new star of the team. United showed yesterday that if their tactics are right, they can beat any opposition.

Shaw’s average number of touches in the opposition half have increased along with his crosses and, most importantly, his goal contributions. In his last seven games the English left-back has provided a goal and four assists, and if this is the effect of the increased competition from summer signing Alex Telles, then Solskjaer should think about adding competition in other key areas of the pitch.

Watch the highlights:

Even Guardiola praised United’s performance, “It was a fantastic game. United are incredibly high pressing and they are so fast on the counter. We played good. Unfortunately we couldn’t be clinical up front so we congratulate United.”

Even though, their derby cannot reignite their title hopes with the gap still at 11 points, but they are sitting comfortably at 2nd. They are 11 points ahead of defending champions Liverpool who lost another home match against Fulham this weekend. Yesterday’s win has made Ole the only manager with more wins (four) against Pep than losses (three). Ole is also the first United coach to win their first three away games against their city rivals.
